Based on your situation, you may be able to score a free checking account.
Most banks offer free checking if:
*You are a student
*You have a mortgage or personal loan with them
*You meet their minimum required purchase/deposit transactions
*You have recurring direct deposits (check for minimum deposit amounts)
*You meet their daily balance requirements (depends on the bank, the account must meet the balance reqs for most or all days in the statement period).
I recommend doing a simple google search to see what bank fits your needs. There are a lot of new online-only banks that can provide similar functions of a physical bank at no cost to you.
Another way to save is to choose e-statements/check copies. Some banks, like Bank of America, charge a monthly fee to include copies of canceled checks along with the free hard copy statement.
