This month marks five years since I began my health/fitness journey. I’ve learned so much. The biggest thing being: it’s okay to fall off and indulge sometimes.
There is a lot of information (and misinformation) out there about what to do for better health. We all want a longer and happier life. Articles say to eat this, but not that. Every day, we hear or read conflicting information about what is better for our health. However, I have found that sometimes, it’s better to just eat that chocolate bar (or any other forbidden fruit😉). It all comes down to personal will. It may very well do more good than harm.
At some point, you have to place value in your current mental state. Yes, a standard chocolate bar has at least 200 calories and tons of sugar, but will it make you feel better in that moment? Will it help you focus? Will you be better off after eating it?
The first thing you must do is stop and think of why you want it. What is causing you to want that chocolate bar? As humans, we are wired a certain way; it all leads back to the brain. Are you bored, is it habit, or maybe withdrawals? If boredom is the reason, occupy yourself with something you enjoy doing. Watch a show on TV/Netflix/Hulu, or clean up a bit around the house. If it's habit, start a new fun/healthy habit in its place. If withdrawals, lower the amount you eat each day, that way, you can wean yourself off while the brain is still getting a tiny fix.
If none of those, do you simply just feel like eating a piece of chocolate?
The second thing you must do is stop for a moment and brainstorm, are there any alternatives? Is there anything else you can do to satisfy the mind? If not, is Dark Chocolate an option? Would you be okay with eating a small “fun size” chocolate bar instead? I personally recommend Isagenix IsaDelights. They are a bit pricy, but multi-purposed.
If you know that you can indulge in just one bar and stop there, go ahead, take a seat, eat it, savor it, enjoy it! Set a small goal for you to meet after you’ve eaten the chocolate. For example, plan to clean the kitchen counters after you eat the chocolate or call a friend to chat for a few minutes. Find ANYTHING that will get your mind off of the chocolate after you’ve eaten it. Do the deed, enjoy it, and move on quickly.
The issue isn’t that we fall, but rather, what we do after to make it better. You either get up, and keep moving, or sit there and mope about what happened. Which will you do?
